AP lays-off dozens.
The Associated Press confirms it cut its payroll by 90 employees this week as part of its quest to cut the news cooperative's payroll costs by 10%. The goal was set last October. The AP's revenue is on pace to be off 6% this year. Even so, it's announced plans to cut rates for newspapers and TV stations, but not radio, next year. MORE
MMTC backs Form 323 delay.
The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council joins those asking the FCC to delay the looming December 15 ownership report deadline. At issue is the FCC's requirement all owners be identified along with an FCC Registration number, something requiring the Commission to collect Social Security numbers. MMTC calls that an "unnecessary invasion of personal privacy" and suggests the FCC collect just the last four digits.
Univision honors Rodriguez.
Univision renames its Miami building “The Ray Rodriguez Broadcasting Center” after its former president/COO. Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez also proclaimed the day in honor of Rodriguez, who retired in August after nearly 20 years with the company.
CEA promotes "safe" listening.
The Consumer Electronics Association collaborates with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in a series of PSAs focused on the safe usage of portable entertainment devices. The PSAs will run in radio markets where ASHA’s “Listen to Your Buds Safe Listening Concerts” are held. They recommend users set their volume control to the lowest level where they can hear the music comfortably.
Palin praise for Beck.
Former Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin says she wouldn't rule out Premiere Radio Network's Glenn Beck for a veep slot on a Palin presidential ticket. She tells Newsmax she could envision a few different scenarios if she were to run for office again. "I'm not there yet," she added.
